Verbal Aikido: DBT Skills for Responding to Invalidation

In the martial art Aikido, you don’t meet force with force—you blend, redirect, and aim for harmony. This 2-hour LIVE workshop brings that same spirit to communication, using DBT skills to respond skillfully to invalidation, criticism, and verbal attacks.

You’ll learn how to navigate difficult conversations without escalating or shutting down. Whether your goal is to exit gracefully or transform the tone entirely, this approach helps you stay grounded and effective.

We’ll explore:

  • How to use non-resistance to defuse verbal conflict

  • DBT validation skills that honor both perspectives

  • Ways to set limits with clarity and composure

  • GIVE and DEAR strategies to shift tense conversations

  • When to use gentle humor, curiosity, or silence

You’ll leave with practical tools for ending the invalidation and creating more harmonious communication—even in the hardest moments.

This LIVE workshop is appropriate for anyone who is interested in DBT, clients, family members of people already in DBT, mental health professionals and the general public. There is no pre-requisite. The 2 hour workshop is conducted online using Zoom.
